Mary Ellen, an orphan on her way west to reunite with family, struggles to fit in with the other travelers on the train, who shun her because of her grumpy attitude. The only person who offers her companionship is Sally Mayhew, a fellow traveler whose family is making the journey while battling her own illness—consumption.
