Amy faces off against a prominent lawyer who tries to intimidate her in a paternity dispute. Meanwhile, Maxine wrestles with repairing her relationship with a neighbor. After a brush with death, Vincent develops a reckless bravery that leads to conflict with Len. Peter grapples with his capability to parent a biracial child after he brushes aside a colleague's racist comments. Maxine also pursues her inquiry into sexual abuse at a preschool. Additionally, Amy and Lolly decide to take a self-defense class as a team.
