The Cartwrights build a grist mill to help a disabled rancher who holds Ben responsible for his situation. As Ben navigates the challenges posed by the rancher's unscrupulous caretaker, he unexpectedly finds himself drawn to the man's wife. "Sons can't be everything," he tells her, acknowledging the complications of their lives.
