Worried about Calvin and Brenda's laid-back attitude toward teenage pregnancy, Mary creates an experiment for their sex education class that involves caring for an animal. Brenda and Calvin end up "adopting" an energetic piglet named Alberta, who proves to be quite a challenge. Throughout the experience, the students come to understand just how difficult it can be to look after animals, especially a young one like Alberta, highlighting the responsibilities that come with caring for a life.
