Often underestimated, female gang members are among the most perilous criminals in our nation. Their motivations for embracing a life of crime may vary, but like their male peers, they seek respect and financial gain. In Compton, California, these women dominate the streets, engaging in activities that span from drug trafficking to murder. Out of roughly 800,000 gang members in the U.S., about 70,000 are women, with Los Angeles alone accounting for around 5,000. Many of these women come from fractured families and are in search of a sense of belonging. Gangland delves into the dark realities faced by female gang members.
