Syd attempts to persuade a grieving recluse (guest star Alastair Duncan) to undergo plastic surgery to fix his facial scars, especially after discovering that he's about to lose his home. Meanwhile, Joanie isolates herself from her family, particularly her caring older sister, following her recent miscarriage. In a different storyline, Robbie takes extreme steps to get closer to the attractive mother (guest star Maria Pitillo) of one of his teenage hockey players (guest star Mickey Toft). At the same time, Jim faces challenges as he tries to get his young granddaughter Hannah to take her medication.
