After a chance encounter with Calamity Jane, Joe makes a promise to her dying father to look after her, bringing her back to the Ponderosa. Initially, the Cartwrights, aside from Joe, mistake "Cal" for a boy, but it's not long before they realize the truth. As Cal starts to develop feelings for Joe, he finds her affections unwelcome, particularly with her boyfriend, Doc Holliday, harboring a grudge against him.
