Feeling down about being drafted, Herbie's spirits lift when the girls propose the idea of him becoming an astronaut. Uncle Joe, overhearing their conversation, takes it upon himself to boost Herbie's image and promote a future in politics to the townsfolk. However, when Herbie receives a discharge due to some minor health issues, Kate steps in with a clever plan to help him redeem himself in front of Billie Jo and everyone else.
