Chicken George arrives back in North Carolina only to discover that his sons have tied the knot and begun their own families. While adjusting to this new reality, he learns of a state law stipulating that if he remains in North Carolina for over 60 days, he will lose his status as a free man. Amidst his personal struggles, the country plunges into the chaos of the Civil War.
