Tony Sabina, known as "The Great Sabina," returns to town, captivating his audience with his mesmerizing hypnosis show. Among the volunteers are Stuart Fraser and Frances Shaw. Unfortunately, after being hypnotized into believing she could swim across the Channel, Frances is discovered drowned following the performance. The tragic incident leads to a media frenzy that devastates Sabina's career. Enraged, he plots revenge against those he holds responsible for his ruin. Meanwhile, detectives Jardine and Reid delve into a string of suspicious murders that appear to be orchestrated.
