Mervin Wendell, along with his wife Maude and their son Philip, known for his theatrical con artistry, arrives in Centennial. Jim Lloyd finds himself infatuated with Clemma, the stunning yet unpredictable daughter of Levi Zendt, and he is determined to win her over. At the same time, the British investors have dispatched Scottish accountant Finlay Perkin to the Venneford Ranch for an audit. Struggling to comprehend Seccombe's financial practices and ranch expenditures, Perkin wrongly accuses him of theft.
