Fabien realizes that Louis is responsible for the prisoner's death and uncovers the secret of the Man in the Iron Mask. Meanwhile, Philippe makes the decision to depart from court. Leto persuades Maintenon to back the union between Louis and the Infanta Isabella. However, in a surprising turn of events, Louis weds Maintenon and declares himself the leader of the Church of France. With newfound authority, Louis intensifies his efforts to expand his influence across Europe while launching a campaign against the Protestants.
