Carleton Gage, a key benefactor of the orphanage, is determined to keep it running but falls into a coma and eventually passes away. His nephew, George, aims to shut it down, receiving covert assistance from Ernest Demming. Meanwhile, Joane Proctor, Carleton's sister-in-law, is committed to preserving the orphanage, but her efforts become entangled in the aftermath of Demming's murder, complicating her intentions.
