Now married and residing on a sugar cane plantation in Queensland, Meggie discovers that her husband is more absorbed in his own pursuits and affairs than in their relationship. Despite giving birth to their child, she finds it impossible to alter his behavior. Meanwhile, Father de Bricassart ascends the ranks within the Church and eventually returns to Australia as a Cardinal. In a tense encounter with Meggie, he ultimately gives in to temptation, leading to a passionate affair that breaks his vow of chastity.
