North & South (2004)
S1E1 Episode 1
Nineteen-year-old Margaret Hale and her parents leave their southern home after her father, Richard, resigns from his clergy position in Helstone due to his conscience. They relocate to Milton in northern England, where Mr. Hale takes up a job as a private tutor. Adjusting to life in the north proves challenging for Margaret and her mother. As Margaret navigates her new surroundings, she befriends Bessy Higgins and her father Nicholas, both of whom work in the mills, and begins to recognize the stark social inequalities around her. Witnessing John Thornton, a cotton-mill owner, mistreating a worker deepens her biases, while Thornton finds himself intrigued by Margaret.
