Episode Overview

Madeline is trapped in her room, on the brink of starvation, when Justin persuades the doctor to prescribe a daily laudanum dose, despite its potential for addiction. This transforms Madeline into a shadow of her former self—docile and nearly mute, with little recollection of her passionate connection with Orry and their plans to escape together. Meanwhile, Orry and Brett head to Philadelphia, where Orry intends to share his profits from their joint cotton mill with his friend George Hazard. During their visit, Virgilia confronts Orry about the issue of slavery, leading to tension between them. Afterward, Orry and Brett depart, and it will be a while before they reunite with George. On their way back, they encounter a group led by abolitionist John Brown. Ashton, now married to James Hontoon, continues to indulge in affairs with her other lovers.
