In San Diego, Joe Simmons, a seasoned con artist and a former acquaintance of Sam's, takes Nicholas under his wing. Joe devises a clever scheme aimed at reuniting Nicholas with the Bradfords. Meanwhile, the Bradford family, thinking that Nicholas is staying with a friend, focuses on fixing up the room shared by Tommy and Nicholas.
