J. Scott "Scotty" Foreman, a decorated Air Force veteran and celebrated jet pilot, returns to town for a gala where he will be honored as Man of the Year. Accompanied by his socially elite wife, Jessica, and his assistant, Russ Turnbull, he attracts the attention of reporters Ray Stern and Natasha Cellini, who is tasked with a comprehensive profile on him. Scotty disapproves of his daughter Melinda's relationship with struggling actor Brian MacArthur, despite having a mistress at the hotel. Meanwhile, former lovers Peter and Natasha rekindle their romance. Aware of Scotty's troubled family history, Natasha opts to focus her article on Jessica's resilience instead. Scotty, keen to help Brian’s career, promises him a coveted film role if he plays his cards right.
