Sri Lanka's forests stand out like verdant islands above the land, hosting unique species that have evolved in isolation on elevated plateaus. Cut off from one another, these diverse arboreal havens thrive, connected only by the flights of bats and birds carrying news from afar. Entering these enchanted woods feels like stepping into a different realm, where life flourishes under the nurturing embrace of clouds and mists. Shaped by two monsoons, this microclimate supports nearly half the island’s flowering plants, alongside rare orchids, blue magpies, red-slender loris, and purple-faced monkeys. Despite human encroachment threatening these habitats, as long as water flows, the vibrant ecosystems of these highlands continue to thrive.
