However, during the dry months, the local wildlife faces significant challenges. Hundreds of elephants flock to a large lake, desperate for water. Fearless Sri Lankan leopards hunt spotted deer that come to drink. Mugger crocodiles, trapped in dwindling pools, seize the dry season for mating. Meanwhile, bee-eaters carve nesting tunnels into the parched earth, and troops of toque macaques vie for dominance amidst the island's ancient Buddhist structures.
