Simultaneously, British General William Howe inflicts a severe defeat on George Washington's forces at the Battle of Brandywine. In the North, American General Horatio Gates achieves a pivotal victory at the Battle of Saratoga, ultimately swaying France to join the conflict on the side of the colonies.
