In the 1990s, Black comedians faced exclusion from predominantly “white” comedy clubs, which led them to seek opportunities in South Los Angeles. There, talents like Martin Lawrence, D.L. Hughley, and Robin Harris found their stage. Following the LA riots, comedian Guy Torry created Phat Tuesdays, a vibrant comedy night at the renowned Comedy Store, dedicated entirely to Black performers. This initiative allowed these artists to shine and connect with audiences in a way that had previously been denied to them.
