Gwynplaine, the son of Lord Clancharlie, endures a cruel fate when a vengeful king mutilates his face, leaving him with a haunting, eternal smile. Rescued by a traveling showman, he rises to fame as a beloved performer. Amidst his success, he finds love with the blind Dea, who sees beyond his grotesque appearance. However, with the king's death, Gwynplaine's path darkens as the malevolent jester schemes to ruin him, threatening both his newfound happiness and the life he has built.
