The Expiation (1909)
William finds himself attracted to Edward's wife, Helen. Aware that his feelings could lead to infidelity, he chooses to distance himself. While bidding farewell to Helen, Edward watches them from behind a curtain. Shortly after, Edward takes his own life, convinced that Helen would be better off with William. When William comes back to persuade Helen to marry him, she declines, holding herself responsible for Edward's tragic end.
