The Bells (1926)

Mathias, a well-meaning but desperate innkeeper in Alsace, resorts to murder and theft after killing a wealthy Jewish merchant lodging at his establishment. Tormented by the ghost of his victim, he struggles to find peace. Complicating matters, an enigmatic Mesmerist arrives in town, boasting about his ability to extract confessions from wrongdoers. As Mathias grapples with his guilt and the supernatural consequences of his actions, tension escalates, leaving him to confront his dark choices and the haunting presence that demands justice.
