The Blinding of Isaac Woodard (2021)

1h 52m 2021 United States of America

In 1946, Isaac Woodard, a Black army sergeant returning to South Carolina after WWII, faced a brutal fate when he was removed from a bus following a dispute with the driver. The local police chief violently assaulted him, resulting in permanent blindness and igniting national outrage. His story gained traction when the chief was acquitted by an all-white jury, highlighting the deep-seated injustice of the era. Inspired by Richard Gergel’s *Unexampled Courage*, the film illustrates how Woodard's plight prompted President Harry Truman to initiate desegregation efforts, paving the way for the pivotal Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education.
