In the early 1990s, as Russia reels from the Soviet collapse, the gifted Vadim Baranov forges his own path. Starting as an artist, he moves into reality TV production before becoming the image-maker for a rising KGB officer, Vladimir Putin. Operating at the core of power, Baranov helps construct a new Russia, blurring truth and lies, belief and control. Only the magnetic Ksenia remains beyond his reach, tempting him from the game.
