Overview

Two families, the Stonemans from the North and the Camerons from the South, find their lives connected during the Civil War. After Confederate colonel Ben Cameron is taken prisoner, nurse Elsie Stoneman advocates for his release. As tensions rise in Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Cameron establishes the Ku Klux Klan, leading to a fierce conflict with Elsie's father, a congressman, and his African-American ally, Silas Lynch. The story unfolds against a backdrop of racial discord and personal stakes, highlighting the intense struggles of a nation in turmoil.
