Conniving Ronnie Mason escapes to Los Angeles after killing his married mistress and staging it as a suicide. Adopting a new persona as a writer, he moves into the home of Hilda Fenchurch and her mother. Initially, he charms Hilda, lured by her wealth, but when he learns her sister Anne has inherited $25,000, his affections quickly shift to her. As Ronnie schemes to secure his future, the tension mounts, revealing the lengths to which he will go to manipulate those around him for financial gain.
