Overview

Barry Levinson's semi-autobiographical tale navigates the lives of the Kurtzman family, a Jewish household in 1950s Baltimore. As high school senior Ben grapples with his feelings for Sylvia, a black classmate, their romance sparks cultural tensions in a segregated society. Simultaneously, Ben's brother Van, now in college, becomes enchanted by an enigmatic woman, adding another layer to the family's dynamics. Amidst these personal struggles, their father juggles the challenges of running a burlesque business, all while the family's identity and values are tested in an evolving social landscape.
