The Late Mathias Pascal (1925)

Mathias Pascal, the sole heir of a once-prosperous family, finds himself trapped in a miserable marriage to the beautiful Romalinda, whose overbearing mother makes their home life unbearable. The only joys in Mathias's life are his mother and infant child, both of whom tragically die on the same day. Devastated, he flees to Monte Carlo, where he unexpectedly strikes it rich at the casino. Returning home, he discovers his own obituary, mistakenly linking him to a corpse found nearby. Realizing he's unshackled from his past, Mathias seizes the chance to reinvent his life.
