At 36, former musical dancer Paula McFadden finds herself abandoned by her actor boyfriend Tony DeSanti, who opts for a European film role instead of taking her to Hollywood. To make matters worse, Tony sublets their New York apartment to Elliot Garfield, a charming and generous stranger who allows Paula and her pragmatic daughter, Lucy, to stay.
