Overview

After returning from the Crusades, a weary Swedish knight named Antonius Block discovers his homeland ravaged by the Black Death. In a bold move, he confronts Death with a game of chess, staking his life on the outcome. Plagued by doubts about the existence of God, Block embarks on a quest where he encounters traveling performers Jof and Mia. As he navigates this grim landscape, he becomes resolute in his desire to delay his fate long enough to achieve a single meaningful act before his time runs out.
