Doug Ford
Douglas Robert Ford Jr., born on November 20, 1964, is a prominent Canadian politician and businessman, currently serving as the 26th Premier of Ontario and the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party since 2018. He represents the Etobicoke North riding in the Ontario Legislative Assembly.
Ford co-owns Deco Labels and Tags, a printing company founded by his father, Doug Ford Sr., a former Member of Provincial Parliament from 1995 to 1999. His political journey began as a city councillor for Ward 2 Etobicoke North from 2010 to 2014, during which time his brother, Rob Ford, held the mayoralty of Toronto. Doug Ford's ambition led him to run for mayor in the 2014 election, where he finished as runner-up to John Tory.
In 2018, he made a significant leap into provincial politics by securing the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party. Under his leadership, the party achieved three consecutive majority victories in the 2018, 2022, and 2025 elections. As Premier, Ford implemented notable policies such as reducing the size of Toronto’s city council, introducing the Low-income Individuals and Families Tax credit (LIFT), and navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure has also included the Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act, which empowered select mayors, and the Your Health Act (Bill 60) that broadened access to private healthcare. While initially viewed as a staunch conservative, commentators have observed a shift towards centrist policies and a more collaborative approach with the federal Liberal government since 2020.
