Bob Menendez
Robert Menendez, born on January 1, 1954, is a prominent American attorney and political figure, currently serving as the senior United States senator from New Jersey, a position he has held since his appointment in 2006. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Menendez was appointed to the Senate by Governor Jon Corzine and has chaired the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations twice: first from 2013 to 2015 and again starting in 2021.
Menendez's political career began early; at just 20 years old, he was elected to the Union City School District's Board of Education in 1974. He holds degrees from Saint Peter's University and Rutgers Law School. In 1986, he became the mayor of Union City. Simultaneously, he was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1988, and shortly thereafter, he advanced to the New Jersey Senate after winning a special election in March 1991. Following this, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives for six terms, representing New Jersey's 13th congressional district from 1993 until 2006.
Menendez faced legal challenges in 2015 when he was indicted on federal corruption charges; however, the jury was deadlocked, leading to the dismissal of the charges in 2018. That same year, the Senate Ethics Committee issued a severe admonition due to his acceptance of gifts from donor Salomon Melgen. Despite these controversies, Menendez has maintained his position, being reelected in 2012 and 2018.
