Bernard Droog

Bernhard Droog (1921–2009) was a distinguished Dutch actor renowned for his compelling performances across film, television, and theatre. Over his prolific career, he appeared in 17 films and a multitude of stage and screen roles, earning him recognition as a prominent figure in Dutch entertainment. In 1970, he was honored with the Order of Orange-Nassau, acknowledging his contributions to the arts.

Droog's cinematic journey began with a memorable role as a teacher in the beloved 1955 film 'Ciske de Rat,' which remains one of the most viewed films in Dutch cinema history. He continued to showcase his versatility in comedies, including 'Kleren Maken de Man' and Bert Haanstra's 'Fanfare,' before delivering a standout performance in the 1958 film 'Dorp aan de Rivier,' which received an Academy Award nomination.

Though his film work diminished after the early 1960s as he shifted his focus to theatre and television, Droog left an indelible mark with notable appearances, including in 'Wat zien ik,' the first feature film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. His final film role was in the 1997 production 'Character,' a film that later won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, solidifying Droog's legacy in the world of cinema.
