Frederick Elmes, ASC, born on November 4, 1946, in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, is a distinguished American cinematographer celebrated for his pivotal role in the independent film scene. With a remarkable career marked by collaborations with renowned filmmakers such as David Lynch, Ang Lee, Charlie Kaufman, Jim Jarmusch, and Todd Solondz, Elmes has made a significant impact on cinema.

He began his artistic journey by studying photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology, followed by further education at the American Film Institute, where he graduated in 1972. Elmes later pursued advanced studies at New York University’s Graduate Film Program, completing his degree in 1975. It was during his time at the American Film Institute that he met David Lynch, who brought him on board for the cult classic Eraserhead in 1977. Their partnership continued with notable films like Blue Velvet (1986) and Wild at Heart (1990), the latter earning Elmes an Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography.

Elmes’s talents have also been recognized with another Independent Spirit Award for Night on Earth (1991) and a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on The Night Of (2016). As a testament to his influence and expertise, he became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1993, solidifying his status as a key figure in the cinematography field.
